Duo roller blinds, also called day and night blinds, are one of the most common interior sun screens. They work in kitchens and living rooms, including when the two rooms open into each other, and they suit large windows. The same blind can be used in bedrooms, children's rooms and bathrooms. One type can run through the whole house, so the interior stays consistent.
They are popular with architects and with people furnishing their own home because they combine a fabric roller blind with the light control of a venetian blind. Light and privacy can be adjusted without raising the blind all the way.
Three ways to fit them
Duo roller blinds are ordered in three versions. The choice depends on the size of the window and on whether you want to drill.
- Free-hanging. Fitted to the wall or ceiling, and a good choice for large windows.
- Non-invasive. For anyone who wants to avoid drilling the wall or disturbing the window frame.
- Cassette. The fabric is hidden in a cassette. With side channels or guides the blind does not stand out from the glass, even when the window is open.
How you control the light
Made-to-measure day and night blinds protect a room from strong sun and remain a clear part of how the window looks. What you notice first is the fabric: two layers, one sheer and one opaque, forming alternating stripes. That is why they are also called night and day or duo blinds.
The stripes do the work. The fabric can sit so that only the sheer layer shows, so that it dims the room, or at any overlap you choose. On cloudy days and in the evening the lighter layer is enough, and the room is still private from outside. In hot weather, for example when the house is empty, the opaque stripes can cover the glass completely. The room is then cooler when you come home. The same position helps at night in city-centre flats, where street lighting and other artificial light are strong.
The stripes can also be set alternately. That changes both the amount of light and the angle of the sun, without raising the blind and uncovering the glass. The more of the sheer band that shows, the more daylight comes in. That is useful because the sun changes with the direction the window faces and with the time of day.
One blind for the whole home
Day and night blinds work in kitchens, living rooms and in rooms where the two join. They suit large windows, bedrooms, children's rooms and bathrooms. Using the same type throughout the house keeps the interior consistent. The range of fabrics lets you match the blind to the room's use, its style and the size of the window.
